The perennial Sunday problem of whether it’s too late for breakfast or too early for lunch has been addressed by Nonna’s Italian restaurant on Ecclesall Road, which has just launched a new brunch menu.
From home made buttered crumpets to eggs florentine and Omelette Arnold Bennett, the menu has something for everyone. The Sunday Brunch menu is available from 10:00am to 5:00pm. Eat first, then decide later if you’ve indulged in a late breakfast or an early lunch!

We’ve been working hard over the past few weeks and we’re pleased to be officially launching our new blog style news page this month. This means that the news will now be searchable for users, to let you search old posts and find snippets about specific restaurants. From now on, we’ll be adding short news items as we get them, rather than doing a monthly round up.
Whilst we been busily working away, a few things have changed out and about amongst Sheffield restaurants. One of the most exciting for us is that popular Spanish restaurant La Vina is now part of our on-line booking network, so you can make your table reservation at any time that suits you. It’s free, easy and very fast to use the on-line booking system. See our restuarant bookings page for the current range of local restaurants on the network, plus a further 2,000 restaurants across the UK that can also be booked on-line. Alternatively, you can go directly to bookings at La Vina on Ecclessall Road using the La Vina booking link.
We were sad to see the closure of boho restaurant a few weeks ago and wonder what might come in to replace this top notch city centre venue. Like everything else in life though, as one restaurant closes its doors, another one opens for business and the Walnut Club Champagne Bar and Grill opened at the beginning of December on Ecclessall Road. Also new to Sheffield’s famous road of restaurants is mishmash, which is described by the owners as a comfortable and down to earth cafe-restaurant. Their food is apparently sourced almost exclusively from the Sharrow Vale area of Sheffield.
There was great excitement at Nonna’s restaurant today, as 60’s celebrity singer Lulu popped in for lunch. Apparently she described her chicken as ‘the best chicken I have ever had’ so it was a feather in the cap of head chef Jamie Taylor.

At last the sun has come out. Hurrah! Let’s hope it lasts a while now and gives us all the opportunity we’ve been waiting for to get out into the Peak District and enjoy a good pub meal or two. Talking of pub meals, we have a great review in this month for Rowley’s the gastro pub restaurant, which is run by the owners of one of our top local restaurants, Fischer’s of Baslow Hall. It definitely sounds like one to try.
We’re very excited this month to have done a deal with Spice Yorkshire to bring a terrific offer to our readers. If you’ve ever yearned to do something exciting, like have a crack at white water rafting or fire eating, but aren’t sure about tackling it on your own, Spice Yorkshire could be just what you need to get started. Mind you, they’re not just about adrenalin kicks and adventure, they also have a great range of more sedate social activities, including a dining club, which is what brought them to our attention in the first place.
Anyone who joins Spice Yorkshire through Sheffschefs will receive £100 of event vouchers free, to get their membership off to a good start.

The end of July saw an exciting new menu introduced at Sheffield’s top tapas restaurant, Cubana. The new menu has been created by Chilean chef Fabian Cruz, who has headed up the Cubana kitchen for seven years, ever since they opened as Sheffield’s first tapas bar. They’ve kept some old favourites, but new additions to the menu include ‘Cordero’ - slices of tender marinated lamb sauteed with caramelised red onions and ‘Pez espana’ - smoked swordfish on toasted Chilean bread. There is also an extensive vegetarian selection.
Cubana have also teamed up with Sheffield’s leading Italian restaurant, Nonnas. Nonnas Cucina have created a new range of luxurious Cuban style ice creams exclusively for Cubana, with coffee made from a special blend of fair trade beans.
Once again, the The Walnut Club in Hathersage is celebrating, as they have had confirmation that the restaurant has made it into the Michelin Guide 2008. They don’t yet know what the rating will be, but they are naturally delighted to have received this news, as their aim from the word go was to achieve Michelin status. Richard Mills, Managing Director said ‘I am very proud of our staff, especially our chefs, who work tirelessly in search of perfection with each dish’. We quite agree - a big pat on the back to all of them.
During the summer holidays, The Walnut Club have a special organic children’s lunch box available for just £3.99. Alongside the £5-£10-£5 set menu, this means that the whole family can have a day out in the Peak District and enjoy a great meal, whilst keeping the cost under control.
Book a table at The Walnut Club on-line.
New reader reviews this month include The Ivory, Rowley’s, Bluefin, Baan Thai, Playspace Cafe and Parthenonas.

We all know the value of good background information when we are thinking of trying a new restaurant and the popularity of the Sheffschefs restaurant reviews section is testament to this.
However, even the Sheffschefs team rarely get the chance to pop into the kitchen and food preparation areas for a quick peep at what goes on in there, so we were delighted to see that Sheffield City Council have recently opened up the results of the city’s environmental health inspections, by adding them to a national public information site.
Scores on the Doors has a database of local authority reports on restaurants, take aways and other food outlets, so in just a few clicks we can now all see exactly what standards are maintained behind the kitchen door too.
Latin lovers can experience a dinner dance with a difference at the Casa de Musica event at Cubana Tapas Bar on Sunday 22nd April. The Latin vibes will be provided by Blukana, the Manchester based band led by band leader Daniel Alvarado from Peru. The air will be alive to the sounds of Salsa, Son, Cha Cha Cha and Spanish Flamenco and a set tapas menu can be booked for £17.50 per person. Tapas menu and full event details…
Nonna’s also have a few events lined up to add a further buzz to their restaurant on Ecclesall Road. They have launched a new food and wine club, to give diners the chance to sample some of their delicious food, whilst savouring carefully selected accompanying wines. The next food and wine evening has been set for 23rd April and consists of a four course meal with wine for £45 per person. For May, they have a fabulous vegetarian evening planned. Contact and booking details…
Sadly, one of Sheffield’s well known Indian restaurants, Delhi Junction in Dore, has decided to close later this month, in preparation for a relocation to premises in Leeds. That’s the second restaurant in a few months to make this sort of move, as Cary Brown of the former Supper Club did much the same not long ago. It’s will be a shame to see them go, we’ll have to wait and see if a new restaurant will join the Sheffield restaurant scene as a result.
The latest reader reviews this month include Bluwater and Everest Tandoori.
